Heavy Rains Return 09/27/12

A very active weather pattern will continue through much of the weekend. Showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop this afternoon and evening across much of West Texas. Temperatures will be cooler today, under cloudy skies. Expect highs in the lower to mid 80’s for most. 70’s look to be a pretty good bet in the mountains.

Moisture from TS Miriam in the Pacific can be seen in satellite imagery, moving into West Texas. This fetch of moisture is quite large and will likely remain with us for a few days. Given the high amount of moisture that now resides over the region, rainfall totals could be significant.

Tonight, the rainfall will kick in near the Pecos River and Davis Mountains. This large area of rain will then drift northeast into the Permian Basin tomorrow morning. Heavy rain and some flooding can be expected early on Friday. Rain will continue to move across the region through at least Saturday afternoon. Look for highs only in the 70’s on Friday and Saturday.

A fair amount of moisture will remain in place on Sunday. However, a trigger will be harder to come by. As such, I’ve scaled rain chances back to 20% Sunday and Monday. Due to the high amount of moisture it won’t take much to fire off additional heavy rain. So rain chance may have to be adjusted a bit as time goes on and shortwaves embedded in the upper level flow can be identified.
