Sources: Dolphins QB Ryan Tannehill to Start Tonight Against Carolina 8/17/12

VARIOUS SOURCES:

It seems the Miami Dolphins are taking a page from the Tennessee Titans' quarterback competition playbook.

After starting veteran Matt Moore in the preseason opener, Miami will go with rookie first-rounder Ryan Tannehill tonight against the Carolina Panthers, per ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Tannehill passed for 167 yards and a TD last week in rainy conditions. His experience with the playbook of Offensive Coordinator Mike Sherman, Tannehill's coach at Texas A&M, could ultimately help him vault Moore and injured David Garrard (knee surgery) as Miami's starter.

The Dolphins picked Tannehill eighth overall in the draft, making him their first Round 1 quarterback since Dan Marino in 1983.

If Tannehill starts Week 1, that would mean four teams (Indianapolis Colts, Washington Redskins, Cleveland Browns) are opening with rookie quarterbacks, an unprecedented amount since the 1970 merger.
