WEST ODESSA-An Odessa church is picking up the pieces after vandals ransacked their sanctuary overnight Saturday.
The vandals left upside down swastikas, anti-religious graffiti and even feces splattered all over the inside of the building.
The pastor at West Side Christian Church says they have no idea who is responsible for what he calls a “hate crime.”
Fans dry the carpet after vandals flooded the church's baptismal, leaving trails of human feces across the sanctuary.
"It was shocking to see that God’s house would be desecrated with human feces in the aisles,” said Pastor Farrell Ard. “These people are full of hate, hate towards God and hate towards Christianity.”
Fresh paint glistens across the church where upside down swastikas and anti-religious messages were painted over.
“It was very explicit, very anti-God,” Ard said. “I feel it was motivated by hate, first of all a hate for God and a hate for God’s church and his work.”
Wood hangs on the window where the vandals shattered the glass with a brick. Meantime, church members work to clean up the mess. But the vandals didn't stop them from having church on Sunday, while Sheriff's Deputies fingerprinted the building.
"You don't fight anger with anger, you fight anger with the love of God, so we continued to worship God outside, with some chairs donated by another church,” Ard said, adding that they are praying for the vandals.
One of the church members said the only way this would have been worse is if the vandals had burned down the building. The church hopes to be ready for its next service Sunday morning.
