State officials investigating Democratic activists 2/22/14
February 22, 2014
AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — The Texas Secretary of State has opened an investigation into whether the Democratic group Battleground Texas has violated state election laws.
A spokeswoman for the agency, which is in charge of Texas elections, said Friday it is acting on several complaints, and if there is evidence of wrongdoing it will refer the case to the attorney general for prosecution.
Republican Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst called for the probe after a conservative activist group produced a video that appeared to show Battleground Texas organizers saying they were collecting phone numbers from voter registration forms they collected.
Texas law allows party activists to register voters, but bans them from transcribing phone numbers from official state forms.
A spokesman for Battleground Texas did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
