Big Spring, Tx
Road construction delays on Third Street isnít just aggravating drivers, itís hurting businesses bottom lines.
Big Johns Bar B Que has been a staple in this town for over 50 years, but due to recent road construction that was suspended for the winter, the owner isnít sure how much longer she can keep it open.
"I havenít been paid in a very long time," said Rhonda Smith, the owner.
CBS 7 visited during lunch time. Typically the kitchen would be hopping. But today, itís fairly quiet and there's just two tickets on the line.
"Business just pretty much came to a standstill," she said.
When Rhonda Smith bought Big Johns nearly four years ago she says you couldn't find a seat. Now, you can pretty much have the whole restaurant to yourself.
"I would hate to see them go we canít lose any business in Big Spring," said
Customers say the fall off the bone ribs are to die for. Despite the good food, Smith says she's dipped into her life savings and will put her house on the market just to stay afloat.
"Itís my life,Ē She said. ďItís my life. I can't reach any deeper."
She has big plans for the restaurant including a drive thru. But, as long as construction cones line the road, sheís closer to closing up than having customers come through her door.
TXDOT officials say they understand businesses are hurting, but the repairs were necessary. Construction will resume next month, but they couldnít say when the section in front of Big Johns will be finished.
