Very Strong Winds Today 2/20/14
Thursday Morning Weather Update
Greg Morgan – Chief Meteorologist
Very strong northerly winds will impact the area today, bringing cooler temperatures and high fire danger! A RED FLAG WARNING is in effect through the day, as strong winds and low relative humidity values will support the threat of rapid fire growth. High will top out in the 60’s to around 70 for all but the extreme southern reaches of the area. Winds will be out of the north at 20-30mph. A few gusts could reach above 40mph.
Winds will calm down and skies will clear tonight. This will allow temperatures to fall, rapidly into the lower 30’s by sunrise on Friday. Expect temperatures to be some 20-30 degrees cooler than they’ve been over the past couple of mornings. A heavy coat should be used Friday morning. However, sunny skies and a southerly shift to the winds will allow for a big warm up through Friday afternoon. Expect highs around 70 on Friday.
Even warmer conditions are in the offing for Saturday. Highs will climb to around 80 in the afternoon, under mostly sunny to sunny skies.
Thicker clouds will move into the area on Sunday and Monday. This will keep temperatures cooler on Sunday and Monday. Look for highs to be in the 60’s and 70’s. However, the clouds will also keep overnight lows elevated. I’d expect lows to be in the 40’s early next week.
