Houston Church Considers Split From Presbyterians 2/17/14
HOUSTON — An influential, wealthy Houston church is considering a split from the nation's largest Presbyterian body.
The Houston Chronicle reports Sunday (http://bit.ly/1dAhc7p) that the First Presbyterian Church, the oldest congregation in the city, will vote next week whether it wants to remain with Presbyterian Church USA or join a breakaway faction that wouldn't allow for gay clergy or marriage.
Presbyterian Church USA, which the Houston church currently belongs to, recently allowed local congregations to decide if they want to ordain gay clergy.
The Houston church has more than 3,000 worshippers at its main location, as well as several other smaller member churches. It has property and assets valued at more than $100 million and a 175-year history in the city.
