Closer Look Wrap Up 2/14/14
The City of Odessa is ranked number one in a Time Magazine list of cities where violent crime is soaring. The data comes from an FBI crime report, which shows that in the last five years violent crime went up nearly 80 percent here in Odessa, with a 3 point 5 murders per 100 thousand residents. Some of the biggest increases include auto thefts and aggravated assaults, but are the statistics skewed and are they cause to worry?
We talked with the Odessa Police Department, Deputy Chief Lou Orras. He said while the statistics are correct this article does not paint a full picture of trends in Odessa. He said Odessa has seen a large number of people moving to the area, and OPD has stepped up patrol in areas known for crime. He said the community does need to be cautious as always and take steps like locking their doors and not leaving their keys in the engine, but they do not need to be worried. He said the community can help by always reporting crime to the police.
