Drug Bust at the Monahans Post Office Puts One Behind Bars 2/13/14
CBS 7 News
A Monahans man, Paul Blake Jr., is behind bars after trying to receive a shipment of marijuana. Law Enforcement tells CBS 7 itís a common occurrence nationwide but has only happened a few time here in the last few years.
Millions of letters are going through the U.S. Postal Service daily. Last week, officials held up one package with two ounces of extremely high quality marijuana coming to Monahans.
"They had a suspicion of the package [...] so they obtained a search warrant to open the package they opened it and did find the marijuana. They sealed the package back up," says Ward County Sheriff Mike Strickland who worked with U.S. Postal Inspectors to time the arrest. The suspicious package was intended for Blake who is now behind bars.
"From there it went to the Monahans post office, we were aware when he signed for the package. The postal inspector alerted us as we made the arrest in the parking lot." He says this wasn't their first time. "It's a pretty common occurrence to use U.S. mail to deliver and they do a really good job at trying to control in it."
Some in town agree, itís not a one-time occurrence.
"You've got so much drugs here that people don't realize. It's a lot more here than people want to believe," says local resident, Gary Dearman.
Right now Blake is charged with possession of a controlled substance in a drug free area and could be charged with state and federal charges as the investigation continues.
