Big Spring, Tx
Today CBS 7 sat down with VA officials to discuss the issue with legionella their water supply. Officials say Legionella is a naturally occurring bacteria, meaning it can be found in any water supply. They say they are taking some of the most aggressive steps in the nation to get rid of the bacteria.
The science on Legionella is still unclear. There is no recommended level of legionella in water or a step by step process to prevent it.
Therefore, when the VA found traces of it in their water samples in September they began an aggressive treating and monitoring campaign.
Since testing revealed those traces of the bacteria, the hospital has treated their system with heated water and chlorine on four occasions.
Throughout the months some samples of water have contained traces of Legionella. However, they say no one has contracted Legionnaires Disease.
The VA requires hospitals test their water once a year. Officials at the West Texas VA say they will test it more often than that.
