ALPINE-The City of Alpine is tightening its budget and officials say they'll have a larger surplus than expected after line-by-line audits.
Until recently, the City of Alpine has not been contesting any request for unemployment by former employees. The news comes after new City Manager Erik Zimmer helped make line-by-line changes to Alpine's budget.
Simply by disputing when fired employees request unemployment, the city will save about $20,000 this fiscal year alone.
Other changes include eliminating thousands of dollars in consulting fees for evaluations Zimmer says can be done by city employees.
Zimmer says the city should come in with about a $644,000 surplus this fiscal year. Good news for a city that's been plagued by its financial situation in the past.
