FORT STOCKTON--The Fort Stockton Police Department was hoping to be in a new and bigger building by now, but due to lack of funding and other roadblocks, the department is at a standstill for the time being.
There are many reasons why the Police Department is in need of a new station, one of those reasons is for security purposes, such as not having bullet proof windows throughout their building.
The department’s historic building, which was a bank in the 1900s, was not designed to be a police station.
City Manager Raul Rodriguez says their original goal was to have a new station built last October, but coming up with the 1.3 million dollars needed to start construction is a lot more difficult then they imagined.
“Currently the estimated costs are a little high. We would have to go to outside funding like a loan or bonds, but if we can bring that cost under the million dollar mark, then it’s probably something we can do ourselves,” said Rodriguez.
Money isn’t the only roadblock they face, Rodriguez says they’re still in search of a property large enough to build a 12,000 square foot station.
Police Chief Art Fuentes says the fact that the building is over 100 years old has forced them to move their investigation team across the street into what use to be their old station.
“We need a municipal court area for our municipal judge, we need offices for our code enforcement, we need more offices for our police departments, investigators, and administrators,” said Fuentes.
Fuentes says their plan is to put all the public safety departments in Fort Stockton under one building, which will help them to be more efficient.
Rodriguez says they hope to start construction on a new building by the next fiscal year.
