Davis Calls for Settlement in School Finance Suit 2/10/14
AUSTIN, Texas — Democratic candidate for governor Wendy Davis is calling on Texas to settle a school finance lawsuit and convene a special session of the Legislature.
Davis said Monday that her opponent Attorney General Greg Abbott should reach an agreement with the 600-plus school districts that have sued the state over budget cuts.
Abbott has said that his job is to defend laws passed by the Republican-controlled Legislature.
Davis said Abbott is the state's top attorney and should do what's best for Texans and that means not defending a broken school finance law. She said he should recommend the Legislature meet in special session to find a permanent solution to the problem.
District Judge John Dietz has already declared the way Texas funds schools unconstitutional and will soon release a written decision.
