JV Cheer Team to be Added at Permian High 02/04/14
February 4, 2014
Odessa - A new Junior Varsity cheer squad will make its appearance at Permian High beginning next school year. That decision was made by ECISD school board members at a special meeting Tuesday evening where they heard from both cheerleaders and parents.
“I was on a mission basically, I wanted this, I wanted something and I went for it,” said ninth grade cheerleader Courtnie Swafford.
For an hour and a half members of the public debated with the school board about bringing a JV cheer squad to Permian High. Finally, the question of if a JV cheer team would be added at Permian High School was answered. “It appears right now, yes. It will start the fall semester and we will just go from there,” said Permian High School Principal James Ramage.
The board made a motion to reverse the level three grievance to a level two. Level two will allow the administration at Permian to make all the changes to the schools constitution and create a JV for the 2014-2015 school year.
“Oh my gosh I’m shaking, I’m like so happy right now, I honestly didn’t think that we would make a change, and I didn’t think that that would happen today, I’m so happy,” said Swafford.
Because cheerleading is not governed by UIL each school is allowed to create their own constitution, determining what grade levels can and cannot be on the cheer squad. As ECISD begins their conversion of bringing ninth graders into the high school, officials were anticipating a change but not until 2015.
“There will be some bumps and bruises because we have not had a JV before and actually we have not had interest from our students in the past, so this is something definitely new,” said Ramage.
The change is something young cheerleaders say will help them out in the future. “That’s just another thing that can go on your college resume,” said Swafford.
Ramage says he and administration will work through the spring semester to make changes to the school constitution, and bring it back to the board for final approval in April.
