UIL Realignment - The District of Death 2/3/2014
February 3, 2014
Whenever the World Cup groups are selected, there is always the famous Group of Death. Well this morning at UIL Realignment, a similar group took shape in district 3-4A Division 1.
The Big Spring Steers will have a very challenging district next season, as they will square off against Abilene Wylie, Brownwood, Snyder and Stephenville.
"I mean, yeah we are nervous!" said Big Spring head coach Phillip Ritchey. "You always want to be in a district where you are a lock for the playoffs, if that's possible. But, you know, in this district if you make it you've earned it."
In 2013 the Steers fell in the playoffs to Stephenville in the Regional round. Stephenville also took down Brownwood in the first round of the post season. The Yellow Jackets made it all the way to the State Semifinals before losing to Kilgore.
Both the Snyder Tigers and Wylie Bulldogs were Bi-District champions before falling in the Area Round of the post season. So it's safe to say every team in this group is used to post-season success.
"We're gonna have a good team next year and we feel like we are going to be capable of playing those guys," Ritchey said with regards to the tough competition.
Another concern for the Steers will be travel. Stephenville isn't exactly down the road.
"Either direction we were going to go it was going to be a hike," said Ritchey. "We were either going to El Paso, or to Borger and Pampa or to Stephenville. I really didn't have a good feeling either way."
The good news: none of these schools are strangers to Big Spring.
"We're really pretty familiar with all four of the other schools," Ritchey added. "It'll be a good district. It'll be challenging, it'll be fun and we'll give it our best shot."
