Republicans Dominate Campaign Fundraising in Texas 2/3/14
February 3, 2014
AUSTIN, Texas — Political pundits were stunned last month when Democrat gubernatorial candidate Wendy Davis reported raising more money than Republican rival Greg Abbott.
But as the campaigns prepare to release another round of campaign finance reports on Monday, the GOP is still the fundraising champion in Texas.
Davis' campaign raised $12.2 million. But that's small compared to the $26.93 million that the GOP statewide slate raised in the last six months of 2013, including Abbott's $11.5 million.
Davis' fellow Democrats, meanwhile, only raised $1.42 million or their statewide office bids.
Party primaries take place on March 4 for the eight top statewide races, with the winners competing in the Nov. 4 general election. Each race gives candidates a chance to spend campaign cash on building their name recognition and promoting their party.
