NASCAR Announces Revamping of "Chase" 1/30/14
January 30, 2014
NASCAR announced today some major changes coming to the Sprint Cup playoff in 2014. These are the most extensive changes to "The Chase" format since the playoff was introduced in 2004.
The playoff field will now be expanded from 12 to 16 drives, and will now be known as the NASCAR Chase Grid. A winner-take-all format will be introduced to emphasize race wins and not wacky numbers and math.
There will also be a change to how drivers can qualify for The Chase: any driver who wins a Cup victory in the first 26 races is all but guaranteed a berth to the post season.
Once in The Chase, the number of drivers in contention for the title will decrease after every three Chase races. That leaves four contenders in the final race, and the cup will go to the highest finisher among those four.
At a press conference today, NASCAR's CEO Brian France said, "The final race of the season will settle the NASCAR championship. No math, no bonus points for leading laps or previous wins. It's going to be the first of four drivers across the finish line. And you know what? That's as simple as it gets."
