Landfills are, yet again, a big topic of conversation for Big Spring City Council.
At last night’s meeting, the council awarded the bid for construction of the East Cell at Big Spring/Howard County Landfill to Max Jantz Excavation.
Mayor Larry McLellan, however, feels that the council needs to continue looking towards the future when it comes to trash.
McLellan says he wants to increase the landfill fee for residents by three dollars. He explained that the new project will, over the next five years, will cost around 15 million dollars to construct including permitting fees. He says if they don't increase the fee, the cost would have to be covered by taxes.
Since the fee was raised by one dollar in 2004, those fees have generated one million dollars which is kept in the city’s closure fund.
