1st Witness Called in Trial of Mom in Girl's Death 1/29/14
ABILENE, Texas - The prosecution has called its first witness in the child-injury trial of a West Texas woman in the death of her 22-month-old daughter.
A Taylor County jury earlier Wednesday heard opening statements from attorneys for both sides in the case against Tiffany Klapheke (klah-PEEK'). She's charged with injury to a child in the August 2012 death of Tamryn Klapheke, who died of malnutrition and dehydration.
The 23-year-old Abilene woman says her husband's deployment overseas left her too stressed to care for their three children, including the infant daughter.
If convicted, Klapheke could receive a sentence of up to life imprisonment.
Air Force airman Thomas Klapheke divorced his wife. The state has temporary conservatorship with their father granted restrictive custody.
