Big Spring, Tx
The Big Spring State Hospital has fired an employee after they allegedly took patient records off hospital grounds and threw them in a city dumpster.
Health officials wouldn't say why or how but they do know a psychiatric nurse assistant took them off the hospital campus.
"It's just not acceptable. Our patients deserve better. They expect privacy and we expect their information is kept confidential," said Christine Mann, a spokesperson for the Texas Department of State Services.
The papers were day to day records taken from units.
"it included this like diagnosis, vital signs and allergies," Mann said.
The documents are supposed to be turned into a shift leader who locks them in a recycling bin for shredding. That employee's shift leader was cleared of any wrong doing, but officials would say why the documents weren't reported missing.
The hospital is retraining staff and reviewing policies and procedures.
