Mass. Woman on Trial in Pal's Killing, Fetus Theft 1/27/14
WORCESTER, Mass. — The trial has started for a Massachusetts woman charged with beating and strangling her pregnant friend, then cutting the fetus from her womb and passing the baby girl off as her own.
Prosecutor Daniel Bennett said in opening statements Monday that 39-year-old Julie Corey was showing off Darlene Haynes' baby as Haynes' body lay decomposing in her Worcester (WUS'-tur) apartment.
Corey's attorney, Michael C. Wilcox, is trying to cast blame on Haynes' boyfriend, saying he was abusive and police failed to follow up on several leads.
Corey, her boyfriend and the baby were found at a homeless shelter in Plymouth, N.H., several days after Haynes' body was discovered. Wilcox did not say how Corey got the baby.
Corey has pleaded not guilty. The boyfriend wasn't charged. The now 4-year-old lives with her biological father.
