Midland – Midland ISD is working to implement a new program geared towards the oil/gas industry; they call it Petroleum Academy.
The school district’s vision is that this academy would serve both the college-minded students who are on track to be our future engineers, but also our career-ready students who would be able to seek employment with our local oil/gas companies immediately after high school.
The district believes if this program is successful, they hope it to be a springboard for other college and career programs – examples of these programs would be healthcare and culinary arts.
MISD officials say HB5 has potential, it also poses many challenges. The logistics of implementing the programs that HB5 will create and expanding the programs Midland ISD already offer have been at the forefront.
School officials say one absolute necessity will be to expand the career and technology courses they offer at all of their campuses but with an emphasis at our two 9th grade centers.
The potential for our Career and Technology Program to expand is guaranteed with HB5, according to MISD. They say they will be working closely with staff in this program to plan accordingly.
