BIG SPRING-Big Spring State Hospital is in need of the community's help in restocking their fashion shop with clothing and shoes for their patients.
The hospital serves over 200 patients with mental illnesses from all over Texas.
Edwina Donneil, who’s originally from Dallas, has been a patient at the hospital for a little over 3-years, and says she is grateful for the shop because like many others, she checked in with only one set of clothes.
"It means a whole lot, and otherwise, it means a lot to the patients, because they can be able to have something to pride themselves with and be able to clothe [themselves] with," said Donneil.
Melissa Adams, the Program Coordinator for the Therapeutic Training Program, says recently the shop has been running low on items such as jackets, hats and shoes for both men and women.
"Many of them come here and they don't have clothing, so just making that need available through donations from the community is so very important," said Adams.
Each month, patients are allowed to come into the shop and pick out a few outfits, and are also given some hygiene items.
The shop also serves as a therapeutic tool for many patients who are shown how to shop and put outfits together.
"We provide vocational skills to patients, so when they leave this area, this hospital, they can go back and have some skills to relate to, maybe working in a clothing store," said Adams.
The hospital is also looking for suitcases for patients to take their clothes and belongings in when they're discharged.
Adams says the fashion shop is the sole provider for patients to have clothing and hygiene items; this is why they are hoping the community can lend a helping hand.
Anyone who wishes to make a donation can contact the hospital at 432- 268-7535.
