MIDLAND-The death of two-year old, Grace Lillian Ford, of Plano, Texas has saddened many hearts.
Family members of Grace say she lived with her mother and stepfather in Plano.
Earlier today friends and family of Grace’s stepfather, hosted a benefit Washer Tournament in Midland to help with the medical and funeral costs.
Family members of Grace say they were overwhelmed and grateful for the generosity that West Texans have shown them.
Just weeks before Grace’s 3rd birthday, she was found unconscious in a Plano apartment, according to family members.
"On January 9th she was found duct-taped, and she was dead. They brought her back to life, and she was sent to Children’s Hospital in Dallas, and they kept her alive long enough to donate her organs," said family member Gena Seigman.
According to the Dallas Morning News, police are investigating Grace's death as a homicide, and say that her “father called 911 about 1:40 p.m. Thursday for a welfare check” on the day she was found unconscious.
The news source also reports that Child Protective Services is conducting their own investigation. They say the agency investigates any time a child dies from abuse or neglect.
Family members of Grace say they were asked by police officers to not comment on this ongoing investigation until an arrest has been made, however; they did comment on how grateful and touched the family is by the number of caring and generous hearts out there.
"It's just amazing. The prayers and the support of the community, not just from around here in West Texas, but nation wide," said Seigman.
An account set up to help with medical and funeral expenses for Grace, has already received thousands of dollars donated from people from all around the nation.
Roland Stone, a friend of the family, organized today’s Washer Tournament.
"When I heard about this, about Gracie, and you know me having two daughters of my own, and my girlfriend having two grand-babies of her own, it kind of just hit me right there in the heart. So we decided to do a benefit washer tournament," said Stone.
