Big Spring ISD Names Wigington As Superintendent 1/14/14

Big Spring, Tx
The Big Spring School Board named Chris Wigington superintendent today. The school district has recently performed poorly during testing and the board members say Wigington is the man to turn things around.
Board President Irene Rodriguez says they didn’t interview a single candidate and reviewed resumes today. She says they decided on Wigington because of his performance as interim.
Applause rang out in the audience after the board announced what most were expecting, Interim Superintendent Chris Wigington will be interim no more.
"I can’t explain how excited I am. It’s a great opportunity to continue the path that we’re on," Chris Wigington said.
The decision comes as the TEA is visiting the district due to poor ratings. Board President Irene Rodriguez says they feel he has Big Spring on the right track, citing how he’s increased morale.
"we feel that just the atmosphere with our teachers right now…we’ve done a 180 turn," she said.
Still, many in the community called for a state wide search for a superintendent saying the district is in disarray. The school board didn’t hire a search firm and wouldn't say how many people applied.
They also reviewed all the applicants today. Rodriguez feels that was adequate time to make a decision.
"That was the right amount of time and we’ve taken the process as it’s supposed to be done," she said.
She says the district is well aware of their current rating and their decision will improve the schools.
Rodriguez did tell me all the applicants were from within the district. Some have speculated that the district was always going to chose Wigington and not give other candidates a fair shot. She denies those allegations saying the boards decision was based on the resumes submitted and Wigington’s performance.
