Mayor Wes Perry today officially passed the torch of leadership to the new Mayor of Midland. Two council members also took office bringing new blood to the city.
Today a group of Midlanders were sworn into public office bringing new blood and new ideas that will help change the future of the Tall City.
It's a bittersweet day for Midland City Council as former council members transfer power to the newly elected officials.
"Mayor Wes Perry did an outstanding job. We are going to miss him. He is an outstanding leader for our community, touched a lot of lives, made a big difference in our community. We know we'll miss him for the guidance but we know he'll be here in spirit and in the community" says Mayor Jerry Morales.
Councilmen John James and Michael Trost along with Mayor Wes Perry were presented with gifts from the city for their service.
Afterwards, J. Ross Lacy, Sharla Hotchkiss and Mayor Jerry Morales took the oath of office.
We caught up with all three at today's ceremony to find out why they wanted to lead the city.
"I always wanted to be a public servant. To do so at the age of 31, it's such a humbling experience and a huge honor," says Councilman J. Ross Lacy.
"It's not a burden, it's a sense of joy, ability to help the community but I can't do it without the help of all these people here today," Councilwoman Sharla Hotchkiss.
Mayor Morales' first order of business?
"Trying to understand who the new council members are trying to understand what their ideology is how are they going to react to some of the agenda items," says Mayor Morales.
"I'm just ready to go to work, this has been a great day for me," says Lacy.
Those council people will hit the ground running as tomorrow marks the first Midland City Council meeting of 2014. The nameplates have already been laid out in the council chambers.
