ODESSA-An Odessa teacher is robbed in her school's parking lot. It happened early this morning and it's raising questions about safety or people across the city who commute to work when it's still dark outside.
It’s a scary situation, it happened at Mlam Rementary before the sun came up. It left neighbors and staff very shaken up.
At 6:45 am, a Milam Elementary teacher was robbed while sitting in her car in the school's parking lot. The man said he was armed as he approached her car and got away with cash and credit cards.
"I’m very surprised something like this happened here, it’s a very safe area, neighbors are always watching out for teachers,” said Milam Elementary Staff Member Amy Russell.
Many teachers are in before dawn and out after dark.
"You know, we come and go at odd hours, they’re going to be arriving sometimes before sun up and often stay till after dark. You have to be mindful of that and take extra precautions,” said ECISD Communications Director Mike Adkins.
Adkins says there are some simple ways to protect yourself.
"Be paying attention, park where it's well lit, keep doors locked and if at all possible travel in groups,” Adkins said.
Neighbors on this quiet street near S. Dixie and Murphy are looking out for the suspect, described as a black male, 200 pounds wearing a hoodie with a dark jacket over it.
“It’s very scary,” said Altha Rand, who lives across the street from Milam.
If you have any info on the suspect, please call Odessa Police at (432) 333-3641.
