TEA To Investigate Big Spring ISD 1/9/14
January 9th, 2014
Big Spring, Tx
The TEA will investigate the Big Spring Independent School District next week due to poor academic performance. The TEA says they review various programs within the district and provide recommendations for improvement.
School officials say they know the district is underperforming as all four elementary school and the junior high school have improvement required ratings. They feel the TEA will find the districts current programs have it on track to improve.
"I don't think we're way out of whack on anything," said Danny Ferrell, an assistant superintendent.
Many parents CBS 7 spoke to say the investigation concerns them. One parent hopes the visit will kick start change.
"There's not enough kids that graduate from Big Spring. They don't even make it to high school sometimes," she said.
During the week long visit, the state will ensure the high school has appropriate access to career training. However, most of the focus will be on determining the cause for "continuing poor performance."
"You're always nervous when the TEA comes, but as long as your doing what you think you should be doing it's no big deal," Ferrell said.
District officials say they have a new emphasis on reading this year. Students of all grade levels have vastly improved. They hope the TEA recommendations will help continue their improvements.
