Ector County Deputy Runs Into Odessa Police Officer During Pursuit 1/6/14
January 6th, 2013
An Odessa police officer is in fair condition after being hit by a Sheriff Deputy's car on Saturday night.
It all started with a drag race on 1936. Deputies chased one of the cars onto Highway 302 before it sped into town.
They finally brought the mustang to a stop on 8th street where the driver, Joshua Marquez Garcia fled on foot.
Officer Donny Rocha Jr. saw him running and chased him. Deputy David Escadero was pursuing the suspect in his car, didnít see Rocha coming and ran into him.
"I viewed the video and you can't (see him with) the lights from the other vehicles. Heís just right there automatically," said Sheriff Mark Donaldson.
OPD says itís unknown if Rocha contacted the Sheriff's Office before assisting. Everything happened quickly and he pursued the suspect as trained.
"In these types of situations, officers are placed in difficult situations where they have to react very fast and sometimes as a result unfortunate circumstances occur," said Steven Lesuere, a spokesman for the Odessa Police Department.
Rocha is in Medical Center Hospital with serious bodily injuries.
DPS is investigating the wrecks but due to the nature of the wrecks, they wonít have their report available for at least 10 days.
