PRESIDIO-The future of the Shafter Silver Mine near presidio is up in the air.
Just last month, the mine’s parent company, Aurcana, announced that it was suspending operations permanently until a new feasibility study is completed.
The news comes after a drop in silver prices and concerns that there might not be as much silver in the mine as previously thought.
The mayor of Presidio says he is worried by the loss of jobs.
"Even back as late as august, we set up a cooperative venture between the city and the school to attract people to get some training to work in the mines,” said Presidio Mayor John Ferguson. “So we were doing everything we could to help people find work up there, but it just kind of came to a sudden halt a couple weeks ago.”
No word yet on if or when the mine will resume operations. The company says it has let go all but necessary maintenance staff at the mine.
