UPDATE: Rose Parade Hosts its First Same-Sex Wedding 1/1/14
PASADENA, Calif. - It's the 125th time the Rose Parade has made its way through the streets of Pasadena, California -- but never before has the parade featured a same-sex marriage.
Two men stood atop a giant wedding cake float today and exchanged vows as part of the New Year's Day event. Spectators cheered as Aubrey Loots and Danny Leclair, dressed in dark suits, faced each other and held hands during the ceremony.
Organizers of the parade said the float represented this year's theme, which was "Dreams Come True."
Still, there were calls for a boycott of the parade because of the gay marriage. A San Diego woman launched a Facebook page urging people to skip the event.
But some spectators said they went to today's parade just for the wedding. One woman who was there with her girlfriend told the Los Angeles Times, "We're a modern-day society, so accept it."
With last year's Boston Marathon bombings in mind, a heavy police presence ringed the parade. More than 1,100 officers patrolled the crowd. Bomb-sniffing dogs and a wide range of video surveillance also were used to detect suspicious behavior. No major incidents were reported.
