Parking has been a controversial topic this year and starting January first, Odessa residents will not be able to park their cars where they always have.
So we took to the streets to see who was prepared for these changes. What we found was that many people were not too happy about the ordinance and many didn't even know it was going into effect.
Odessa residents are preparing for the new parking ordinance which kicks off next week.
"I just hauled one trailer out this morning," said Odessa resident Joe Baer.
Some people, like Dion Schumpert were forced to pay thousands to pave their front yards.
"I don't prefer it, but I mean, you got to obey the law," says Schumpert.
However, some residents weren't even aware that they would be forced to change their habits.
“Where are we supposed to park them?” said one resident who did not know of the impending changes.
Now, residents will not be able to park vehicles and boats in un-paved front yards, construction of new paved areas must meet requirements, and trailers and recreational vehicles may not be parked or stored on the street.
"After the first of the year, if somebody is in violation of the law we’re not simply going to go out and issue a citation. We’re going to educate them; we’re going to give them an opportunity to gain voluntary compliance," says Andrea Goodson with the City of Odessa.
But after one warning, you could face fines up to 2,000 dollars.
