ANDREWS-The Vaughn family fell on hard times after their father lost his job and suffered a back injury. They even began selling off personal possessions just to buy Christmas presents for their children.
That’s when West Texans stepped in and provided a big Christmas for a hurting family. But the giving doesn't stop there. Tonight the family in need opened their hearts and their kitchen, providing a free Christmas dinner to another family in need.
Beneath the stars that light up the Vaughn home in Andrews, you might not realize Christmas almost didn't come.
"We weren’t really expecting much,” said Amy Vaughn.
Vaughn’s husband lost his job and suffered a back injury shortly after, with Christmas right around the corner.
"We started selling some personal possessions online to help them have a Christmas, that’s when people started asking, ‘Well, will you take donations? What sizes do they wear? What kind of toys do they like’,” Vaughn said. “Come Christmas time, they had the whole tree filled up underneath.’
Amy’s 6-year-old son plays a game tonight and her 3-year-old clutches a Toy Story doll because of the kindness of strangers.
"It overwhelmed me, these are happy tears, we don’t know anyone here and we didn’t think this town would treat us so good," Vaughn said.
Her tree is dotted with angels, representing those who donated gifts.
"Those are the ones who helped us have Christmas, right mommy?” asked one of her children. “Yes, these are the ones who gave us Christmas this year."
The Vaughn’s wanted to repay the kindness by preparing a Christmas feast for one of the families who helped them in their time of need—a family who also needed a little help this Christmas.
"Be kind and show gratitude to those that shown it to you,” Vaughn said. “It’s just one way that I can repay it.”
The Vaughn’s say their children have already decided that next year, they don't want gifts. They just want Santa to bring presents to other children in need.
