Sentences Vary for Drunk Teens who Kill in Wrecks 12/23/13
FORT WORTH, Texas - Nearly a decade before a Texas judge shocked many by sentencing to probation a privileged 16-year-old who drunkenly drove into and killed four people, that same judge sentenced another troubled teen to 20 years in a similar case.
Prosecutors continue looking for a way to get a stiffer sentence on Ethan Couch after state District Judge Jean Boyd sentenced him to 10 years on probation. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports that in 2004, Boyd sentenced a boy in similar circumstances to prison.
The confidentiality of juvenile cases makes them difficult to compare. Huyen Pham, a criminal law professor at Texas A&M Law School, says each case is decided on its own merit.
But the comparison will fuel critics who say Couch received special treatment because of his family's wealth.
