BIG SPRING-The community of Big Spring, along with members of VFW Post 4149, held a Candle Light Vigil honoring the life of a local fallen soldier.
It's been 7-years since Army Specialist Robert James Volker was killed defending his country. Both his family and friends here in Big Spring, honored him tonight by holding one last candle light vigil.
Just 5 days before Christmas, the Volkerís received some news that would forever change their lives. Their 21-year-old son was killed while serving our country in Iraq back in 2006.
Since then, this time of the year hasn't been the easiest, or happiest.
"Robert and I are pretty much locked into that first Christmas, which Christmas doesnít stop, it just continues. Itís hard for us to celebrate Christmas," said Melissa Volker, mother of Robert Volker.
But today was a happy day for this family, who says more people showed up than expected.
Family and friends of Army Specialist Volker all gathered around his head stone, holding up lighted candles in his honor, and remembering how special this son, husband, friend, brother, and soldier he was and will always be.
"He was just an all around great person and friend. He just lit up the room," said Courtney Bryant, Robert Volkerís best friend.
Volkerís mother says it was always his dream as a kid to serve his country.
"From day one, I believe as soon as he could talk, he was telling me he was going to be an army man," said Melissa Volker.
Volkerís parents want to remind everyone that we're still at war, and families are losing their sons and daughters in battle everyday.
She says, you never know what tomorrow will bring, so be sure to tell your loved ones you love them today.
Volkerís parents say the next time they hold a vigil won't be for another three years, which will mark their sons 10th year anniversary.
Volkerís mother wants to remind others to never stop praying for our troops, who put their lives on the line for us every day.
