Streetcar System for San Antonio Gains Approval 12/19/13
SAN ANTONIO - Public transit officials have approved a $184 million plan to construct an initial streetcar system ferrying 1.1 million passengers around downtown San Antonio.
VIA Metropolitan Transit trustees on Tuesday gave unanimous consent to a system scheduled to launch in 2017. VIA officials say that as federal funding becomes available, they intend to expand the system.
VIA Board Chairman Henry Muņoz the Third expressed confidence that VIA can secure the federal money to complete the expanded project because the agency has local dollars in hand and has begun federal environmental studies for the streetcar network.
The San Antonio Express-News reports the phase adopted Tuesday will run 3.15 miles. The cost covers engineering work, construction of tracks and a maintenance building for the system, and purchase of streetcars.
