A Midland Police officer is fired and arrested after posting nude pictures of his ex-wife online and using her name on the account, according to an arrest affidavit obtained today. Now CBS 7 is looking at just how easy it is to end up exposed on the site, without any idea private pictures would be posted online.
According to the arrest affidavit, the victim in this case wanted them removed, but the site wanted to charge her $500 to do it. That's when she called Midland Police.
25-year-old former Midland Police Department Officer Jaren Speck faces charges of online impersonation after admitting to posting seven sexually explicit photographs of his ex wife on MyEx.com.
The website allows users to upload scandalous photos with names, ages and locations.
"If you send the picture out to someone, you've now waived your right to what they do with that photo, they can post it or use it as long as it's not for profit,” said Attorney Justin Low of Justin W. Low Law Firm in Odessa.
We found pictures of women on the site from Odessa, Midland, Monahans and Big Spring.
The Netherlands based MyEx.com charges victim's $500 to remove the photos. Only those who post can voluntarily remove the pictures. Speck removed the photos before he was arrested.
"They could probably legally charge you, whether that’s a fair rate is another question,” Low said.
CBS 7 tried to contact the site's owners to ask about the practice, but received no answer from an Amsterdam number associated with the company that holds its web domain.
"Have you ever sent these types of pictures?” CBS 7 asked one Odessa woman.
“No, not naked ones,” she said.
"Probably once or twice, just saying,” said an Odessa man.
"I have, but I’ve learned from it,” said another Odessa man.
“I’m not surprised, I’d do the same thing if I was mad at her,” said another man.
Speck’s case has been given to the Midland County District Attorney for prosecution.
