December 15, 2013
HOUSTON - Three suburban Houston police officers have been indicted on
official oppression charges accusing them of using excessive force in a `suicide
by cop' situation.
Officers Peter Behler, Colin Murphy and Daniel Bassett have been suspended
with pay while the Webster Police Department investigates their actions in the
Sept. 27 incident.
The Thursday indictment by the Harris County grand jury accuses them of
brutalizing a man they say pointed a gun at them and demanded that they shoot
The indictment alleges Murphy and Behler hit the man with their guns and
kicked him while he was on the ground. Bassett's accused of using a stun gun
unreasonably on a man who wasn't resisting.
Their attorney, Greg Cagle, declined to comment, saying he still needed to
examine the indictment.
