BARSTOW-A West Texas family is seeking the help from their community as their son, who is a veteran, remains in a coma thousands of miles away.
Pablo Reyes Jr. has been in a coma for the past week in Hawaii. Doctors are asking his parents to fly out there, but they can't afford to.
"It's very hard because he's so far, it's hard," said Cecilia Reyes, mother of Pablo Reyes Jr.
Cecilia and Pablo Reyes Sr. had just spoken with their son the day he went into a coma. They had no idea anything was wrong with this veteran, who served our country for 8 years.
"I thought he was ok when I talked to him, he said he was good, but he wasn't doing good, I guess he didn't want to worry me," said Cecilia.
Pablo Reyes Jr. was last stationed in Hawaii, where he finished his last of three tours in Afghanistan, and was honorably discharged in February of this year.
Pablo Jr. and his girlfriend were driving one day when suddenly he lost his vision, and crashed his car. No injuries were sustained by the crash, but an hour later he was placed in a coma with a brain hemorrhage.
"I talked to the doctor and he told me he wanted us to go over there, because he wanted to explain to us better over there. I told him I donít got any way to go over there,Ē said Cecilia.
Both Pablo Sr. and Cecilia Reyes live off social security, which barely covers rent. With both of them suffering with health issues themselves, they aren't able to work.
The Reyes family tried reaching out to several different organizations for help, but have had no luck.
One of Pablo's cousins, said a lot of the non-profit organizations they called, said they couldn't help the Reyes's out, because their son was no longer an active duty soldier.
Doctors are in need of his parents to make decisions on what to do next.
"It's very important for us to go see him, because we donít know how heís doing right now," said Cecilia.
For now Reyes's mother sits in her home waiting to hear from doctors, hoping that they will bring good news.
Anyone who wishes to make a donation to help send Cecilia and Pablo Sr. out to be with their son in Hawaii, can visit any Complex Community Federal Credit Union, and ask to make a donation for the benefit of Pablo Reyes Jr.
