ODESSA, TX-It's an annual event that many families in Odessa look forward to each year. The
Heritage Holiday Lighted Christmas Parade is one of the first events to be canceled due to the severe weather storm that hit the Basin this weekend.
Many People in the community are furious that the parade will not be rescheduled.
The Nimitz Junior High Boy’s Athletic Booster Club is just one of the many groups who spent countless hours and money creating beautiful floats, but now they are heart broken, and don't understand why the parade can't be rescheduled.
12-year-old Tristan Dixon was one of many Junior High boys from Nimitz, who was looking forward to being on his own float, in what was suppose to be Odessa's biggest event of the year.
"I'm just kind of sad that we couldn't reschedule," said Dixon.
Kristi Grogan, the President of the Athletics Booster Club, is just one of many parents and residents who believes the parade should be rescheduled. She says it's just not right.
"I felt bad for everybody involved because it just took a lot of time, a lot of effort, but besides all that, it's just the kids, they were so looking forward to it. It was their first time ever," said Grogan.
Grogan, along with the rest of the booster club, were hoping this years parade would be a start to an annual tradition for Nimitz Jr. High Boys Athletics.
"In my opinion it can be done. Where there's a will there's a way," said Grogan.
But, it looks like in this case there may not be a way.
Kay McDowell, the President of the Annual Parade, says originally they had planned to move the parade to Sunday, but they couldn't get all of their entities to reschedule on the same day. This was just one of many reasons as to why there couldn't be a parade.
"We couldn't get the ECISD buses that day. The buses not only bring the band to the staging area, but they also go to the de-staging area, where the parade ends," said McDowell.
McDowell says another main reason why they can't reschedule is because their venue, Odessa College, will not be available next weekend due to graduations.
It looks like Tristan and his teammates will have to save their float for next year.
Even though the parade is cancelled, the Nimitz Jr. High Boys Booster Club is thinking about taking their float over to another area parade. Grogan says they put too much hard work into their float not to have it be shown.
