U.S. Lands in Tough group 12/6/13
COSTA DO SAUIPE, Brazil - The draw has taken place for next year's World Cup in Brazil and the U.S. was placed in the demanding Group G. Along with the Americans, the group includes teams from Germany, Portugal and Ghana.
The U.S. will open on June 16 against Ghana, which eliminated the Americans at the 2006 and 2010 tournaments. The Americans then meet Portugal and 2008 FIFA Player of the Year Cristiano Ronaldo six days later. The U.S. then has just three off days to recover before closing group play on June 26 against Germany.
The U.S. will travel around 9,000 miles between games.
Defending champion Spain will play its opening World Cup game against the Netherlands, a repeat of the ill-tempered 2010 final.
Host Brazil starts its campaign for a sixth World Cup title with an opener against Croatia. Mexico and Cameroon were also drawn in the same group as Brazil.
