ODESSA, TX-With winter just around the corner, hundreds of homeless people will have to face the cold nights that lie ahead with not much to keep them warm, but one group here in the Permian Basin is doing all they can to help.
Pastor Donny Kyker with Jesus House Ministries in Odessa, says that more people are having to live on the streets due to the current housing situation and the cost of living rising.
Now his ministry and Church Under The Bridge of Midland, are teaming up to make sure the homeless don't go cold and hungry this coming winter.
Pastor Kyker says the homeless are often time called "the invisible people" of the town. Both he and Evan Rogers, the founder of Church Under The Bridge, have partnered up to form the Permian Basin Homeless Alliance to help those living in the streets.
“We're teaming up with him (Rogers) and sharing our resources together to reach anybody in need in the Permian Basin," said Pastor Kyker.
Pastor Kyker says their goal is to make sure the homeless don't freeze, or go hungry. Both he and Rogers say everyone deserves a second chance, and that's what both of their ministries are trying to accomplish in a number of different ways.
"Starting next Saturday we'll be going out every Saturday, going to parks and places where the homeless are hanging out, and make sure they're well taken care of," said Pastor Kyker.
The Homeless Alliance team goes out several times a week into different homeless camps and streets with food, blankets, and clothes.
In order to keep helping the homeless, the help of the community is needed says Pastor Kyker.
Rogers and Pastor Kayker are selling thermal long sleeves in order to help raise funds for the number of projects that they have planned.
They want the community to know they're here to help and want to encourage West Texans to join them in helping those who are in desperate need.
"If the community sees homeless on the streets, if they'll call us, we'll make sure that they're taken care of during the winter," said Pastor Kyker.
The Permian Basin Homeless Alliance will be having a public meeting Monday night to strategize how and what more can be done to help out our homeless community.
The meeting will start at 6:00pm at Jesus House in Odessa.
