Letter Fuels Midland Mayoral Race 10/29/13
October 29, 2013
Midland - Local campaigns are meant to be non-partisan, however one Midland resident is changing that and bringing party into the picture. Earlier this month a letter was sent out to Midland residents pointing fingers as to what party a Mayoral candidate stood for.
The letter states that John James is attempting to turn Texas blue. After receiving this letter, John James and his campaign team then sent out their own letter in response.
“What we are running a campaign on is experience, qualification, leadership and vision. Those things are the things that matter to Midlanders,” said Midland Mayoral Candidate John James.
In the letter sent out by Midland Resident Tim Dunn, he states a quote from John James in 2005, which reads, “I’m convinced that Texas is going to get back into the blue column one race at a time.”
“That is a misquote, it is taken out of context, but really the only label that counts in this race is Midlander, that’s the only thing that counts,” said James.
The letter goes on to show his support for Mayor candidate Jerry Morales. When CBS 7 asked Morales how he felt about residents looking at party, his reaction was simple. “The supporters are taking it that direction. It’s supposed to be a non-partisan race. If they choose to bring in party, then we’ll have that discussion.”
While trying to get a hold of Tim Dunn, CBS 7 came across some interesting information. Dunn is actually the chairman of the board of directors of Empower Texans, an influential political group within the state. However for our local Midland candidates, they stand by that this is a non-partisan race and are only looking to improve the Midland community.
“The only label that counts is the label of Midlander, that’s who we are,” said James.
CBS 7 did try reaching out to Tim Dunn but did not receive a call back.
