Officer-Involved Shooting in Lea County 10/28/13
LEA COUNTY, NM - On Sunday, October 27, 2013 at approximately 5:47 pm; New Mexico State Police dispatch (Roswell District) received information of a vehicle pursuit that initiated in Denver City, Texas and was traveling towards New Mexico.
The Denver City Police Department Chief stated his officers along with Yoakum County Sheriffs Deputies were attempting to locate (ATL) Amy Reyna because she had several Felony warrants out of TX and NM. The DCPD Chief advised that a Yoakum County Deputy located the vehicle she was in and initiated a traffic stop; Ms. Reyna was in the passenger seat in the vehicle. Ms. Reyna (35) was from Denver City TX.
The male driver stopped the vehicle in TX and got out. He was arrested on a felony warrant after short foot pursuit. Ms. Reyna jumped into the driver’s side of the vehicle and fled. At that time a Yoakum County Deputy and Denver City PD officer began pursuing her into NM. The Lea County Sheriff’s Department was called to assist. LCSO did take the lead on the pursuit once it entered NM.
She then went into a pasture off of State Road 132 near mile marker 9. This location is approximately fifteen miles north of Hobbs NM. Ms. Reyna still drove about three quarters of a mile off the road. Her vehicle then came to a stop and she was then surrounded by units. At that time, Officers discharged their weapons.
Ms. Reyna succumbed to gunshot wounds she received on scene.
