Trial Could be Moved Over Slain Texas Deputy 10/27/13
October 27, 2013
NEW BOSTON, Texas (AP) - An inmate charged in the 2011 fatal shooting of a Northeast Texas sheriff's deputy wants his trial moved from Bowie
The Texarkana Gazette reported Sunday that attorneys for Tucker Strickland of Texarkana seek a change of venue in his capital murder trial due to media coverage.
Investigators say Strickland, who originally was charged with assaulting his mother, overpowered Deputy Sherri Jones as she took him to a competency hearing. Prosecutors say Strickland shot Jones with her own gun at a courthouse in New Boston and fled. He was caught in Arkansas.
Strickland, who remains in custody, was found not competent for trial but in May medical experts determined he was competent. The change of venue motion was filed Friday.
Prosecutors are not seeking the death penalty.
