FBI Investigates City Of Alpine 10/24/13
October 24, 2013
Alpine - Alpine city officials are confirming with CBS 7 that the FBI is investigating the city's financial matters. For the past two months Alpine has been working through difficulties concerning millions of dollars supposedly missing. After an investigation, it turns out the money never existed in the first place, but authorities are still concerned.
City officials admit to having irregularities and that those should be looked into. But more than just financial problems, one more accusation is being thrown at the city that they have been shredding important documents before the investigations.
“With all that is going on, it just really looks bad right now,” said Alpine City Council Member Mike Davidson.
Mayor of Alpine Dr. Avinash Rangra admits to having irregularities and invites an investigation, however he says he has not seen proof of any of these accusations.
“I asked these guys give me the truth and show me this corruption. They shrug their shoulders and say you know what I mean, well no I don’t know what you mean,” said Rangra.
But according to Davidson officials in the office have admitted to seeing documents being shredded, but defend themselves by saying they were only duplicates. “I think it was just a horrible judgment to shred documents right now, just rent a store room, pack it up and put them somewhere out of the way.”
As soon as Rangra heard that documents have been shredded he says he immediately called law enforcement, even taking it a step further. “I said seal off his office because I don’t want any perceptions about this.”
As the city moves forward to fill the holes in administration personnel, Rangra says they will be doing background checks and asking very tough questions.
