Closer Look Wrap Up 10/24/13
A new study shows disturbing details concerning children in on West Texas County. In the survey the Midland Coalition asked about 3000 students about drug and alcohol use. More than 26 percent admitted to consuming alcohol this year. This number is down from last year. However more than 23 percent answered yes to marijuana use and thatís up 10 percent from five years ago. This survey also shows that teenagers are now starting to use at the average age of 12. We spoke with Kim Henderson from Palmer Drug Abuse who said they have had reports of kids trying alcohol or drugs as early as 5. She said marijuana use has tripled in the past three years.
More schools at ECISD are moving to project based learning. In fact, 16 schools are now piloting this model. Tina Lopez with ECISD explained that New Tech Odessa has had great success with project-based learning. She said it allows students to use higher level thinking skills.
The Permian Orchestra and Satin Strings can get you in the mood for Halloween next week with the annual Permian Spooktacular. This year will feature songs from the Lord of The Rings. The event is next Tuesday.
