Back to the Future for the NBA 10/23/13
NEW YORK - NBA owners have unanimously voted to change the NBA Finals format back to 2-2-1-1-1 from 2-3-2. In short, instead of the series opening with two games in one city before switching to the other city for three and then back for two, the Finals will open with two games in one city before switching to the other city for the next two games followed by single games.
The change was approved during the preseason board of governors meetings and will take effect with this season's finals.
The current format of 2-3-2 was instituted in 1985 in part to ease the amount of cross-country travel with the Celtics and Lakers frequently meeting for the championship.
