NEW: Syria's Assad: Factors for Peace Talks Not Set 10/21/13
BEIRUT - Syria's president says the elements necessary to hold peace talks to end the country's conflict do not yet exist.
The United States and Russia have been trying for months to convene an international conference in Geneva to negotiate a political solution to Syria's civil war. The U.N. chief has set mid-November for the proposed conference.
But speaking to Lebanon's Al-Mayadeen television on Monday, Syrian President Bashar Assad said "the factors that would help in holding it are not in place if we want it to succeed."
He said it's not clear who would represent the opposition, or what credibility they would have inside Syria.
He also said that no date has been set for the conference.
