LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) - A San Antonio man has been sentenced to 1½ years in federal prison for mail fraud relating to a scheme that cost University Medical Center in Lubbock almost $700,000.
A federal judge in Lubbock on Friday also ordered 40-year-old Rodolfo Reyes Mata to pay almost $55,000 in restitution. Mata pleaded guilty to mail fraud in July 2012, saying he conspired with hospital vice president Robert Gregory Bruce to submit false bills to the hospital between June 2007 and December 2011.
Bruce, who's 46, resigned in December 2011 and pleaded guilty to a mail fraud count. He was sentenced last month to four years and three months in federal prison and ordered to pay more than $737,000 in restitution.
Bruce and Mata both could have received 20-year prison sentences.
